How to feed the world without costing the earth

Content Section

2 Aug 2018 - 2 Aug 2018

Fenner Seminar Room

Globally, agriculture is the greatest threat to biodiversity and a major contributor to anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions. How we choose to deal with rising human food demand will to a large degree determine the state of biodiversity and the wider environment in the 21st century. This talk focuses on two contrasting supply-side approaches to this challenge: land sharing, in which farmland is made as friendly to wildlife as possible, albeit at the cost of lower yields; and land sparing, in which space for nature on unfarmed land is maximised by farming elsewhere at high yields.

Results of  Legume (clover) and soil testing project

Content Section

25 May 2018 - 25 May 2018 | from 9.30 am to 12.30 pm

Tharwa Hall, North Street, Tharwa

Join Dr Susan Orgill and Dr Belinda Hackney from the Department of Primary Industry for a half day workshop on the ACT Legume (clover) and soil sampling project. Soil and clover samples were tested from 17 ACT farms in September-November 2017. Come and hear the results of the testing program.

Susan and Belinda will cover what was done and why (sampling protocols), pasture, soils and clover nodule results. They will also talk about why legumes in pastures are so important, and how to manage for persistence and nodulation in permanent pastures (so those clovers keep on pumping nitrogen into your soils!).

A BBQ lunch will be provided and workshop participants are encouraged to stick around and have a chat with Susan and Belinda about their individual test results. Whether you participated in the project or not, please feel free to come along and find out about the results of this project.

RSVP: to Sally, email: [email protected] or Ph: 62052913 by Monday 21 May.

Within the Kosciusko 2 Coast region there are many community-conservation groups each wanting to develop and promote their messages more clearly, present those messages successfully through the media, win over greater community support, open up financial pockets to support conservation, develop the skills of members and recruit new members who might share in the running of their organisation… and the list goes on.

The forum/workshop addresses these aspirations. Debbie (Community Engagement and Development Officer) and Alison (Senior Project Officer, Communications, Conservation Programs) are employed by OEH to help build community group strength and organisation. This is a free event and morning tea and lunch are included.

To register: Please provide name, phone & email address to Geoff Robertson
Email: [email protected]  Ph: 0403 221 117/6241 4065.

This event is sponsored by K2C partners: OEH, Queanbeyan, & ACT Environment, Planning Sustainable Development Directorate.
