    ACT NRM Council

    Urban Landcare

    The Department of Territory and Municipal Services (TAMS) in the ACT is responsible for the management of many different types of urban open spaces ranging from formal town parks to semi-natural open spaces and native grassland and woodlands.

    These greatly modified spaces are highly fragmented with a large urban interface and are therefore continue to be subjected to much disturbance. An enormous range of opportunities exist for Landcare volunteers to assist in the management of the open spaces and supplement the Government’s core activities. TAMS encourages active community involvement, and residents working together are making significant contributions to the regeneration and management of our open space areas. Landcare is a community-based program in which volunteers, supported and assisted by TAMS and the Catchment Groups, help in regenerating and preserving open spaces. Landcarers may operate individually or be part of a group. It is a great opportunity to learn about the local area, the local community and to develop an understanding of vegetation and other environmental issues. TAMS can provide

    • Loan of tools and equipment;
    • Assistance in obtaining plants and seed;
    • Materials for the on-ground activities; and
    • Technical information

    Urban Landcare activities may include:

    • Weed management;
    • Revegetation;
    • Seed collection;
    • Creating bush friendly gardens; and
    • Propagating locally occurring native plants.
